Short History of Gyffin Community Centre (formally known as “The Church House”)
The building was suggested by the Rev Robert Jones in 1898 , and following a slow start ,a £200 donation from the “Bishops fund “ and local private subscriptions the scheme was started , and the building work took 2 years, finally opening in 1904
Initially the building was used as a school for the local Gyffin children with in the neighbourhood to save them journeying to either Conwy or Henryd.
The following is an account from the “North Wales Weekly News “of August 1904.
The building was described as granite and cream rough cast, the roof consisting of pattern blue and green slate
The building of a schoolroom separated from the classroom by a folding glass screen, clock rooms and offices
The building work cost £940 and it was to accommodate about 100 scholars
The Gyffin new school building was opened on Wednesday 3rd August 1904 by the Lord Bishop of Bangor and despite the heavy rain that fell there was a large gathering at the opening ceremony
The Architect was Mr Herbert North BA , and it was built by William and Enoch Williams of Talybont.
